July 23, 2001, Greencastle, Ind. - Blue, a dog frequently seen swimming in Bowman pond in the late 1980's and the “writer” of a column for The DePauw newspaper in that era, passed away last week. That word comes from his owner, W.J. Nichols, a 1989 graduate who also recalls the canine assisting with freshman orientation and of the 1989 Mirage yearbook including a photo of Blue with the graduating class.
In his note, Nichols writes, “many of my classmates and DPU professors and staff shared some good times with (Blue) and have inquired about him through the years. If appropriate, this may be worth sharing.”
Nichols included this song, which he wrote for Blue's 13th birthday:
My dog Blue
Defies gravity.
He'll dive for a bone
To the bottom of the sea.
He beat all odds
When he turned thirteen.
My dog Blue
Defies gravity.
He jumps so high
I think he'll never come down.
He smiles and winks
At every girl in town.
He'll pull an apple from a tree
Before he hits the ground.
He jumps so damn high
I think he'll never ever come down.
Blue sits in the front
Of my pickup truck.
He likes to see
What's coming up.
And hear Willie and Hank
Getting down on their luck.
He always sits in the front
Of my pickup truck.
Now his bones are old
And his coat don't shine.
But he still knows how
To make me smile.
He's a wise old chief
With a twinkle in his eye.
But his bones are old
And his coat don't shine.
My dog Blue
Defied gravity.
He'd dive for a bone
To the bottom of the sea.
He beat all odds
When he turned thirteen.
My dog Blue
Defied gravity.
My dog Blue
Defied gravity.
My dog Blue
Defied gravity.
“Thank you to everyone who loved, cared for, and threw a stick for Blue over the past 13+ years,” Nichols wrote. “He was a good dog, one of my best friends. We buried him under the plum tree Tuesday night.”
